KABUL: Seven Taliban rebels were killed in two separate raids by Afghan soldiers and their NATO allies in troubled eastern Afghanistan.
Muhammad Gul, Afghan army spokesman said that four Taliban were killed in Paktia in a joint operation by the US and Afghan forces.
Gul said that another three Taliban militants were killed after Afghan troops gunship helicopters attacked them in Khost near the border with Pakistan.
The afghan military spokesman said that four suspects were also arrested during the operation. ... more

Protesters clash with police in Afghan east, 2 dead

SHINWAR: A least two people were killed and seven wounded in eastern Afghanistan on Saturday in clashes between police and demonstrators protesting against civilian deaths at the hands of foreign troops, witnesses said.
Several thousand protesters had blocked a highway through Nangarhar province linking the capital Kabul with Pakistan. They said they were demonstrating against the killing of three civilians in the area by foreign forces in an overnight raid.
"Two of the protestors have been killed, six more wounded and one policeman has also been hurt by a stone," said a witness.
The protesters said five civilians had also been detained in the raid, in the Shinwar district of Nangarhar. Both NATO-led and troops under U.S. command are stationed in the province. ... more

Lebanon army revokes government moves against Hezbollah

BEIRUT: The Lebanese army said on Saturday that it was revoking measures taken by the government against the Hezbollah movement and called for all armed militants to withdraw from the streets.
It said that the head of airport security, who had been reassigned from his job, would remain in his post and that the army would look into a communications network set up by the militant group.
The military said it had taken these decisions in the light of a government wish that it rule on these matters. The army''s statement came shortly after Prime Minister Fuad Siniora made a televised address to the nation.
Tuesday''s government decision to reassign the head of airport security and launch a judicial probe into the communications network sparked bloody clashes between supporters of the Hezbollah-led opposition and the Western-backed ruling bloc. ... more

CRAWFORD: The White House has called for election and UN human rights monitors in Zimbabwe to ensure an end to violence against opposition leaders and their supporters in a presidential run-off.
Talking to reporters at Crawford, The White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said Zimbabwean opposition leaders and their supporters must be able to freely campaign in the presidential runoff poll.
Gordon Johndroe called for election and United Nations human rights monitors in the country to ensure free, fair and independent elections.

SENECA, Missouri: A tornado that spun across the Oklahoma-Missouri border killed several people as severe storms raked the central part of the country, taking at least 16 lives, mangling buildings and trapping people in rubble in the storm-weary region.
At least 10 people were killed after severe storms spawned tornadoes and high winds across sections of southwestern Missouri, the State Emergency Management Agency said.
At least six people were killed as the tornado flattened the northeastern Oklahoma town of Picher.
The number of injuries across the area was not immediately available. ... more
