ISLAMABAD: PPP MNA Farzana Raja said on Tuesday the government intended to bring a constitutional package.
Speaking at a current affairs programme of the Geo TV channel, she said the Election Commission was a constitutional body but in the past, it was not independent. The constitutional package they intended to bring had the modus operandi for the appointment of the chief election commissioner as well, she added. Responding to a question, she said Fakhruddin G Ebrahim resigned due to his personal reasons.
She reminded that during the last 36 days of their government, they released judges and Pemra was brought under the ambit of the information ministry. During that period, no programme of any TV channel went off air and cable operators were not being pressurised, she added.
She said the concept given by late Benazir Bhutto in her last book “Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy and the West” was being furthered by Asif Ali Zardari and he had formed a coalition with the PML-N despite all the differences with it.
The PPP co-chairperson was following the policy of reconciliation and not the policy of personal vendetta, she added. “Had he (Zardari) wanted to practice the politics of revenge, he would have taken on all those people, who committed excesses to him during his imprisonment,” she said, adding: “If he had wanted confrontation, he would have started it the day when Mohtarma (Benazir Bhutto) was assassinated but he gave the slogan of we want Pakistan.”
