
ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has taken suo motto notice of government's decision to commute the death sentences into life imprisonment. The decision was approved by the federal cabinet the other day.nnChief Justice of Supreme Court, Abdul Hameed Dogar has issued the notice under Article 183-4 to the respective ministry, saying it is to safeguard the public interest.nnJustice Dogar has ordered the Attorney General and Interior Secretary to appear before the apex court in this regard on the 14th of July.nnEarlier, the debate over death penalty had created a hue and cry by political and religious parties in the Parliament. They argued that only the families of the victims have the right to revoke the death sentence, and not the government.
