ISLAMABAD: Top police officials of Islamabad and Balochistan are said to have quietly discussed the possibility of arresting the younger brother of PPP provincial minister Sadiq Umrani and Naseerabad Union Counsel Nazim Sardar Fateh Mohamamd Umrani, who were earlier reported to be the architect of the burial of five women alive on July 10.

But, it is not known that why these two primary suspects are not being touched by the police or asked to appear for questioning despite lapse of one week since the probe started, as all the available evidences with the police have indicated their involvement in the gory drama played in a desert of Balochistan.

Meanwhile, sources said after a weeklong investigation into the burial of the women, the police bosses are now convinced that these two political personalities of the area had played an important role not only in blocking investigation at the local police station level, but they also had ordered the brutal treatment with the women.

The official sources said Tariq Khosa who is monitoring the investigation from Islamabad has already spoken to the IG Balochistan Asif Nawaz about the possibility of questioning and arresting the brother of Sadiq Umrani and Fateh Mohammad Umrani, as one of the accused in the police custody is said to have given clear indications about their involvement in the whole sorry affair, which ended with the burial of those girls.

This correspondent made several calls to Tariq Khosa but he did not attend. Even a text message was sent on his mobile but he did not respond. During the investigation, which are now being conducted at Quetta, it has been learnt that a small Jirga was held at Baba Kot after those girls were brought back at gun point from Usta Mohammad, where they had gone with their mother and aunt to marry men of their choice. For twenty four hours, those unfortunate girls were made to wait for the outcome of deliberations of the Jirga, which was said to be held without father of the girls. This provoked the father to go to the local police to lodge a complaint against those who had subjected his daughters to such kind of inhuman treatment. The shocking aspect of this honour killing is that the girls were not killed by their father or brothers but some distant relative did it in the name of tribal customs and honour.

Sources said one of the accused during the investigations gave useful clues to the investigators, which had convinced the police to finally summon Abdul Sattar Umrani and Fateh Mohammd Umrani for questioning. The sources believed that the police officials were convinced that these murders were committed on the behest of powerful tribal personalities of the areas, who were also enjoying political clout.

Talking to The News, Sadiq Umrani had confirmed the incident but had denied that his brother Sattar Umrani was involved in the crime. He had nominated Sardar Fateh Mohamamd Umrani as the murderer, who was said to be the uncle of those girls. But, quite ironically, Sadiq Umrani was not pressing for any investigations into this crime to get the name of his brother cleared, who is already facing a case of killing a girl and her would-be husband on their way to court in a taxi. Even the taxi driver was murdered for his crime to take those girls to the court.

Sources said, the Balochistan police have not dared so far to summon Abdul Sattar Umrani and Sardar Fateh, who belong to the PPP as the whole of the provincial cabinet is by tribal chiefs, including the chief minister.
