NEW YORK: US media reports revealed on Monday that secret peace talks were held between Afghan government and Taliban in Saudi Kingdom.
Both sides agreed to resolve Afghan issue through dialogues, report said.
According to report, the peace talks, hosted by Saudi King Abdullah, were attended by former Taliban Commander Gulbadin Hikmatyar, eleven other delegations of Taliban and representatives of Afghan government.
Mullah Omar was not part of the team. All parties elaborated their point of views in details. Taliban leaders clarified that their alliance with Al-Qaeda was not based on long-term basis.
During the talks, all parties agreed that the only solution to Afghanistan's conflict is through dialogue, not fighting. The source described the Mecca talks as an ice-breaking meeting where expectations were kept necessarily low.
The current round of talks is anticipated to be a first step in a long process. According to the source close to the talks, it has taken two years of behind-the-scenes meetings to get to this point.
Saudi Arabia is one of the three countries, which accepted Taliban leadership in 1990.
