KARACHI: Surprised over West Indies’ decision to cancel the Test tour, Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ejaz Butt on Sunday said that there was no such proposed tour or commitment from the WICB and it was based on just hearsay.
“Look there was no proposed tour of West Indies coming to Pakistan for Tests. It was all based on hearsay. Nothing was definite because there was no commitment from the West Indies,” Butt told reporters in Lahore after presiding over a meeting of all the senior officials of the Board.
Interestingly, the chief operating officer Shafqat Naghmi, who has talked about sending an invitation to the West Indies to play two Tests in Pakistan or even in Abu Dhabi in November didn’t attend the meeting. When contacted Naghmi said he was visiting his village for a prior commitment and declined to comment on cricket issues.
Naghmi, a senior bureaucrat was one of the most influential officials in the Board headed by Nasim Ashraf, who had brought him in for the job on deputation from a government posting.
Butt said he had met with the officials to discuss with them his way of working and also
the financial standing of the Board so that they are also aware of it.
“We also discussed how we will work in the future. I can not go into the detail of their agenda which is very lengthy but there are many urgent matters that need to be taken up. “I will go for whatever we can get, which is good for Pakistan,” he said.
