KARACHI: Gifted youngster Salman Virk qualified for the main round of the table tennis event of the Third Commonwealth Youth Games, after recording splendid victories against Sri Lankan and Jamaican players.
In the Games, currently in operation in Pune, India, the frail-looking youngster Salman Virk showed great guts, toppling Sri Lankan Budeka Walagampala and Jamaican Peter John Linson with margins of 3-2 and 3-1 to book a berth in the main round. The score was 9-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-6, 12-11.
However, the hard earned victory against the Sri Lankan boosted the morale of Virk as he played with full control in his second tie against Jamaican Peter Jonhn Linson, emerging victorious with impressive figures of 3-1. The score was 11-3, 11-13, 11-7, 11-4.
Virk will now face an England player in his third league match today (Tuesday) but it will be a practice show for the young man as he has already qualified for the main round.
