KARACHI: Seventh seed Abdul Sattar knocked over third seed Sohail Shahzad in the semifinals of the second phase of the 12th Karachi Club Open Snooker Challenge 2008, here at the club's Amir Bakhsh Billiards Hall on Wednesday.
Sattar's opponent in today's best of nine frame final would be top seeded Khurram Hussain Agha who toppled fifth seed Qasim Kamani in the other pre-final.
Sattar, having stunned defending champion and second seed Naveen Kumar Perwani in the league outing, extended his giant-killing act by overwhelming Sohail Shahzad 5-2 with the frame scores of 62-54, 58-44, 40-83, 34-68, 67-48, 59-46, 63-28.
Sohail, one of the most promising youngsters in the national circuit, staged a fightback after losing the first couple of frames. He had narrowly lost the first two frames and he came back strongly to win the next two frames to draw level.
Just when it looked as if Sohail will dominate the proceedings, Sattar reproduced the magical form that had earned him an upset win over Perwani a couple of days ago. He pocketed the next three frames on a trot to knock Sohail out of the competition.
The other semifinal tie between Khurram Agha and Qasim Kamani followed the predictable course with the former calling the shots and recording a comfortable 5-1 win with the frame scores of 104-0, 69-57, 67-45, 61-26, 44-67, 67-50.
Khurram, who advanced to the pre-quarter-finals of the recently concluded IBSF World Snooker Championship in Wels, Austria, was in complete command of the situation from the outset against the unfancied rival.
Having dethroned Perwani only the other day, Khurram started off with a classy break of 77 in the opening frame and followed it up with one of 55 in the very next frame. He was off to 4-0 lead in no time. Qasim gained some consolation by taking the fifth frame that only delayed the inevitable.
